Encoding Songs to 192 kbps MP3 Format
If you have Apple iTunes or Windows Media Player 10 or 11 installed on your computer, use the links above for detailed instructions on encoding your songs into MP3 format. Or, if you're looking for a very cool free audio recorder, editor as well as an encoder, check out the Audacity link above. Audacity is available for Mac OSX, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.
winLAME
If you don't have any of the above programs or just don't want to use them, and you want something that is free, then another program we recommend is the winLAME encoder.
winLAME is an encoder for several audio formats, including MP3 (MPEG Layer 3), Ogg Vorbis and more. winLAME lets you set up the encoding process with an easy-to-use wizard-style user interface.
winLAME supports many input audio formats, and uses the LAME MP3 encoding library for encoding and the MAD decoding library for decoding.
For Windows 2000 and newer versions, you can download winLAME by clicking here.
For Windows 95, 98, 98SE and ME, you'll need to first install the Windows Installer 2.0. You can download Windows Installer 2.0 by clicking here.
Audacity
Audacity is free audio recording/editing/encoding software available from SourceForge.net. It is available for Mac OSX, Microsoft Windows, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems. We recommend the stable version - but you can try the beta version if you feel brave and geeky! You can use Audacity to remove excess silence or otherwise edit your songs before encoding them. Click here to check it out.
There are also many CD Ripper/MP3 Encoders that you can purchase. We recommend Winamp Pro - it is inexpensive, easy to use and works very well. You can check it out by clicking here.
