Old Soldiers Never Die
info
General MacArthur was huge hero from WWII - and deservedly so.

Unfortunately, he developed a huge ego to go along with his great reputation. When he didn't see "eye to eye" with Truman regarding Korea, he virtually *dared* the President to fire him.

Truman, never one you should want to engage in a game of 'chicken', didn't flinch back a bit. It was an extremely unpopular move by the President. MacArthur was given a hero's welcome back to the States as Truman was given talk of *impeachment*.

Even so, historians now point to this as an important moment, one in which the power of the President as commander in chief of the USA's armed forces was put to the test.

Truman was quoted as saying "I'd rather lose the presidency than have World War Three".

Lyrics from the second half of this song come directly from General MacArthurs address to Congress upon his retirement.
