Persephone came to Irene during a road trip. In an effort to fall asleep, shed imagined the moon lady from her childhood. She hadnt called for the moon lady in several years and was surprised that her imagination created an older woman. When Irene asked the moon lady why she had aged, the apparition replied, I age as you age. You cant be Persephone forever, you know. Her words stayed with Irene and, two weeks after the road trip, Irene sat down and wrote Persephone in about twenty minutes.
