One hot summer day when I was a child, I came up with an idea that if I wrote a song and sang it for my guardian, she might be distracted enough to forget to give me my daily beating. I was 8 years old and I prayed as I wrote my very first song. Something happened and I began to hear music in my head. It was as if a radio had been turned on in my head. I wrote the song and rehearsed it over and over until she returned home. As soon as she walked into the house I rushed over and told her about the song. Then, I immediately began to sing it as she put the groceries down by the whipping strap. I sang with all my heart and I did my little routine. I was stunned to see her sitting down with a glass of Vodka listening intently as I finished the song.
She smiled a smile I had never seen on her before. There was a warmth in her presence as she began to clap her hands with sheer joy at my performance. Instead of a bloody beating that night, I got an extra helping of ice cream.
45 years and over 400 songs in 12 genres later, here I am on the internet displaying my music to all who may want to hear. Now a days I do everything. I perform all the instrumentation and I sing all the vocals. I am a one man band. I never had a music lesson. I just taught myself how to play. I have travelled all over and performed with many, many bands and musicians. But one thing I am noted for is my songwriting. I have won many international and domestic contests and I have had about 30 songs signed and commercially released.
Alas, I am a dinosaur in the industry. Very few people write songs with pure song forms anymore. You know? songs that have an intro, chorus, verses, bridges and a finale. Most artists just loop something and throw some lyrics on it now a days. Technology has made many worthy musicians lazy. But I stand here on the internet as a constant reminder about "The Real" and the legacy left behind by real musicians who paid their dues. Just like way back in the day, the radio continues to play in my head and I continue to write what I hear. God is good! I hope you like what he's been playing in my head recently. Enjoy!
