RULES OF THE ROAD REVIEWED!
October, 2007
(UK) "'Rules of the Road' is long on substance and short on pretension. The album was recorded in Dallas, and has the flavour of a Gregg Allman solo album, with some neat organ and tasteful backing vocals. This is particularly the case on songs like 'Blue Sky Lightning'. Tobin James has a gritty and soulful voice... This is an album which benefits from repeated playing, where the phrasing and emotion in Weiss' voice becomes more and more appealing. The songs have that authentic and timeless Blues sensibility."

BIO
Tobin James - who has previously appeared on SongPlanet as a member of Jaded Soul - began his career as a professional musician in Australia back in the late '90s/early Aughts, as he traveled around in search of a new direction. Blues got fully into his blood during a stint in Chicago, and he became a presence on the Texas Blues scene soon after returning home to Dallas. In fairly short order, he released a CD with Code Blue, followed by the Jaded Soul demo that can still be heard here on SongPlanet, and had his song, "Lonely Dog Blues" included on the soundtrack of the John Keeyes film, Mad, Bad - The Movie. Winner of the jury award for Best Independent Film at the LA Film Festival, the movie is scheduled for release later this year.
James debuted as a solo artist in July of 2007 with the release of his new CD, Rules of the Road. Backed by his Dallas club band, Damaged Goods, the disc contains eight of his originals (including the full-studio version of the Jaded Soul demo, "Join the Party"), plus covers of songs by a couple of good friends of his: Aussie Blues legend Henry Correy, and the Dallas Blues guitar wizard, Texas Slim (who also appears on the disc). Tracks such as "Blue Sky Lightning", "Lonely Dog Blues", "Double-Dealin' Mama", and the title cut are currently in heavy rotation on Blues radio shows in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, and have been picked up by Internet stations based in Germany and the UK.

The Texas native now lives in New York, so that his wife, Holly (a native New Yorker and an accomplished actress) can find more work in her field. He's taking it slow for now, gigging mostly in Manhattan with his new backing band, The Lonely Dogs, while he gets settled in.
