luthea salom Location: new york, new york
Reflections of Luthea's nomadic and bohemian upbringing are evident throughout her skillfully crafted songs. Having grown up, traveled and lived in so many different parts of the world, this young, multicultural and multilingual artist couples her life with her music, proving to be a unique charismatic universe worth discovering.
The mythical qualities of a nomadic lifestyle and songwriting come somewhat naturally to Luthea whose childhood consisted of a certain '70-'80s era nomadism growing up in the east coast of Canada only to later emerge in the totally different culture that is Spain in an artistic environment peopled by painters and writers. Her family decided to return to settle in Barcelona, their native city.
Luthea soon adapted to the challenges of new languages and ways. Yet the nomadic spirit called her to a new life on her own in London at just 17. It was this capital city where she started to discover the true artist in herself, spending most of her time writing songs, playing live and collaborating with other local musicians. After this important stage of her life, restless Luthea decided to embrace yet another new culture, that of New York, where she recorded her second album and has been steadily capturing the imagination of both the media and North American audience. The vital experience found in this magical triangle formed by Barcelona, London and New York has played a major role in the development of her artistic intuition and special creative universe, which is translated through the uniqueness of her songwriting and the interpretation of her music.
"I feel half North American and half Mediterranean. It's the best way I'm able to define my roots."
Luthea started her music career at the age of 13 when she already found herself the singer of a young jazz formation. From here she started to perform at different festivals around Spain and to collaborate in several rock bands. At 17, after moving to London she joined the band of Bo Walton as well as others while she also continued to perform as opening act for Jefferson Starship, Nils Lofgren, Alanis Morissette.

LUTHEA SALOM
Incessant Spinning (Frank Andrada Music) 2005
- David Malachowski
Luthea Salom is a resident of both Barcelona and NY, and her recent release “Incessant Spinning” is a clever collection of cute but not precious tunes recorded in Kingston (NY) and impeccably produced by Salom and the renowned Malcolm Burn. (A protégée of Daniel Lanois, Burn has attached his ethereal mark to CDs by Emmylou Harris and Chris Whitley).
The textures and tones painted here are priceless; organs and quirky guitar lines volley for attention with Salom’s slinky vocals and clever turns of a phrase. Like in “Dragonfly” where she tells us “Fear’s a gum stuck to your bum/pulling you down making you succumb”.
Salom sings in a childlike yet wise voice that steers tunes like the driving “Die to Live,” dreamy “Like A River,” haunting and infectious (possibly Kingston inspired?) “ Winter Tires” are all filled with her unflinchingly optimistic bohemian spirit.
Particularly moving is her “Accidents” a brutal anti-war allegory in which she turns up the intensity from a simmer to a boil.
These songs weren’t pragmatically made to be hits, but could just be hits just because they’re so good.
Salom tours in Europe and often plays in New York and the States. Seek her out: http://www.lutheasalom.com
