With musical styles ranging from Metal to Rock to Post-Alternative; even to mellow, Jazzy Blues, it's hard to pigeonhole the music of Nine Years Under into one category. Listening to their vast collection of original material, one might hear hints of such diverse acts as Disturbed, Led Zeppelin, & Ozzy Osbourne along with elements of STP, The Who, early Queen & even The Beatles. The Myrtle Beach, SC trio consists of Steve Senes (guitar, vocals, volume, bad humor and principle songwriter), Joe Lorenzo (bass, vocals, aggression, broken mic stands) and Ken Bass (drums, percussion, vocals, electronic noises, Greenville hookups and original drink concoctions). The music is diverse, as are the band members themselves.
Originally conceived in 2003, Nine Years Under came to be when, after 9 years on the Myrtle Beach cover scene, Steve realized he had some pretty good song ideas and set out to see if he could make them into great songs. Once started, the ideas flowed like water and Steve knew he was on to something. Finding the right Bassist and Drummer became the point of focus towards realization of this vision.
Gigging in Greenville, NC, Steve struck up a friendship with this wild party nut named Ken Bass. It didn't take too long to learn that Ken is one of the East Coast's finest drummers with an impressive résumé - and an even more impressive grasp of the art of enhancing a song with his own unique contributions. One wild night, after being subjected to over an hour of pre-production demos at blistering volume, Ken agreed to come on board. Since that time, Ken has been instrumental in the planning and execution of the live show.
Needing a powerful, aggressive Bassist, Steve called upon longtime friend Joe Lorenzo. Besides being a great player, Joe is an energetic performer, driven by the music he's playing and is "all out" in his musical involvements. As it turns out, Joe had grown completely sick of the whole cover music scene and was ready to jump at the opportunity to be a part of 9YU. So, without hesitation Joe hopped on board and the rhythm section was complete! The consummate metalhead, Joe brings an energetic, adrenaline-fueled dynamic to his performances.
The combination of this brutal rhythm section with Steve's inspired, award winning guitar work, passionate, guttural vocals and energetic stage presence has created an unstoppable machine. In early 2006, merely weeks after beginning preparations, 9YU attracted the attention of Grammy nominated producer John Custer (Corrosion of Conformity, Probot [feat. Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters fame], Cry Of Love, Sass Jordan, James Hetfield of Metallica and many others), who has been working with the band in his studio, refining their already powerhouse vibe into a wall of sound. Custer remains active in the development of Nine Years Under, and has quickly become a crucial element of the band.
9YU has its own voice in the music world and, if early listener reaction is any indication, look for Nine Years Under to create quite a stir in the upcoming months.......
