"ONCE YOU GET STARTED"

BACKGROUND INFORMATION ON ONCE YOU GET STARTED

As with most AVALANCHE music, this song is autobiographical. It is about life in the throes of addiction. It personalizes the isolation and despair that goes hand in hand with the problem. At the time I wrote this song, I couldn't see a solution, or that there even was one. Today... through the miracle of Recovery...all the dreams I thought long dead have been "recovered." My dreams were, like me...not dead...they were just lost.
This is another one of those songs that Mark and I collaborated on. I had the lyrics already written, and they were just waiting for music when Mark walked into rehearsal with an idea for a new song (the introduction and verse chords). I immediately heard the chorus in my head, and the chords for solo sections came nearly as fast...and in less than an hour, we had this song. We spent a little more time working out the twin guitar leads at the end...but this song just came together very quickly. Once again, the original guys were outstanding on this tune...especially Charles Calmese's awesome bass work. It is a real shame that we never got a chance to record this song with that lineup. During the Studio Sessions, I had to learn all the parts that Mark Easton had originally played, and unfortunately, Charles extraordinarily unique bass lines...we could only guess at. But I still think the song, for the most part...comes close to what we did with the original lineup.
