The current line-up of Pure Red Iguanas is Billy Clews: bass guitar and vocals; David Hendry:drums; Michael Clews: lead guitar and vocals; and John Hendry:acoustic guitar and vocals. Other Glasgow groups the guys have variously been involved with include the radio-favourites Cryptic Clews, nineties trio The Carmichaels, The Clews Brothers and Semantix. After a few years away from the live scene doing guitar poses for the hallway mirror, and having got a bit fed-up being bedroom singers, fate was about to intervene when, in the spring of 2001 when bass-guitarist Billy and work-mates and acoustic guitarists John Hendry and Jim McGonigal decided to start doing jam sessions. They were joined by Billy's brother Michael Clews on lead guitar and Jim's friend Billy Purdie on drums. They took a block-booking at the Practice Pad in Maryhill and before they knew it, a year had gone by and they had produced twelve of their own songs by the summer of 2002 in a set of recording sessions entitled Carbon 14. The Carbon 14 title was the band's way of acknowledging that they were starting to get-on-a-bit by music industry standards and suggesting you could use carbon-dating to work out what age they actually were. By the way, I hate it when someone has to explain a joke to me, too..... Shortly after the completion of the Carbon 14 sessions the band was reduced to a four-piece following the departure of Jim. However, the new all-original songs kept appearing and the band set-out on a new set of recording sessions at the Practice Pad entitled Face Of The World that were finished in the summer of 2004. These sessions took around 18 months to complete, produced another twelve new songs, and were generally considered to be a marked improvement on the previous sessions. During these recordings, the original drummer Billy Purdie left. His replacement was John's brother David. At this point Pure Red Iguanas decided that they would get into live gigs again and spend some time rehearsing a live set which culminated in gigs at The Vale in Glasgow in August and December 2005. They returned to The Vale for another live appearance in November 2006 and are currently in the process of arranging more gigs for 2007. Pure Red Iguanas have recently finished their current recording studio sessions. This time they have been even more productive and produced the traditional twelve song package plus one for luck! Having now played a few gigs, the live sound of Pure Red Iguanas continues to develop and they are more or less ready to get out there and rack-up the stage miles.
