armor
 Location: philippines

Armor is currently based on his home city of Iloilo, on the island of Panay, Philippines. Panay belongs to a group of islets known as the Visayas islands.

Like the rest of the world, these islands has its own settings. A visitor will surely notice that the urban areas are teeming with malls, hotels, cafes, universities, and karaoke bars that resist traffic jams and overcrowding, and signifies progress. On the other hand, the local radio and tv are vocal about crimes, corruptions on the government, poverty and environmental destructions. Armor blends his personal expression and sound experimentations to reflect these events and situations in his music.

On these provinces assaulted by complicated third world problems, one cannot expect a lively music scene except maybe on the capital city of Manila. Yet, a few determined artists and musicians continues their cause. Among them is Armor. If Iloilo will have a musician that will represents its culture, Armor will likely fit into this category.

Armor grew up in Calinog, the central most part of Panay island (perhaps the central most part of the Philippines) to which he describe the locality as “the birthplace of nature and human creativity.” He began writing poetry when he was 15 years old. He borrowed a guitar and self taught. Then he began songwriting. As early as that time, he knew that he will become a serious musician. Armor mixes electronically generated drumbeats and bass lines with live guitar and keyboards. He also use toys, tribal instruments and real life sounds. He wrote the poetry and he sings. These formulas were used to record his cds “Walking on a Third World Street” (2003) and “Primitve Devices” (2004).Currently he has a new cd which he describe as “folk music with ambient elements.” After more than 15 years of making music, Armor is currently earning the reputation as the father of Iloilo's independent music.

One cannot feel a strong indie scene In the Visayas region which includes the main cities of Cebu, Iloilo, Bacolod, and Dumagete. There are a few independent labels and gigs that showcased artistic bands, but remains hidden from the masses . The mainstream being saturated by western pop genres and muzak. Still a handful of independent musicians and visual artists get national popularity with their craft, and live a famous lifestyle. But Armor is not one of them. Though he has offers of records deals, he remained unsigned and markets his cds on his own. Is he is not doing gigs or conducting music lessons for kids on the urban areas Armor goes home to his beach house on the southern part of Iloilo to live a simple life and commune with nature.
