SongPlanet Builds A Better Cell Phone

Android Developer Challenge

SongPlanet.com has been involved in the Android Developer Challenge initiated by Google for the last couple of months and we recently submitted version 1 of the SongPlanet Android project, code named "SongPlanet Radio EJammer" to the competition. Win or not, EJammer will be available to all Android cellphones when they are released later this year.

If you've visited your artist admin page recently, you will notice a number of new fields to fill in so that your EJammer links will work properly. (If you don't have a CDBaby, YouTube or MySpace page, just leave the default values that we have entered.)

Here are some of the current and planned features:
• Plays the current radio stream from WSPR, SongPlanet Radio
• Browse the currently playing artist page and browse or play their catalog
• View the artists' Web sites, CDBaby, YouTube and MySpace sites, check out song lyrics, send the artist a message, and search the Web using a preconfigured Google search link related to the artist
• Music sales transactions - Purchase your favorite artist's songs
• Mobile play lists (the "Pocket Playlist") - As you check out the streaming music and artist pages you can easily add them to your local play list to stream your favorites anytime you desire
• Ability to email "Pocket Playlists" to friends to play on their Android phones or to non-Android friends to play on their PCs
• Mobile Ecommerce POS (point of sale) - Go to an artists performance or SongPlanet festival and purchase the music right from your mobile device - No waiting in line to buy a CD - Pick it up on your way out the door, have it mailed to your street address or download digital versions
• Find artists and venues in your area or when you are traveling
• Utilize Google Street View to check out local music venues in conjunction with a SongPlanet video database of the inside of the venue, allowing consumers to see the facilities, preview the types of bands/music played, as well as the type of clientele

More screenshots of the various functions are available on SongPlanet.com.

NOTE: NEW TIME FOR FEATURED ORBITS!

The DJs have chosen their "Picks of the Month" from the tunes that were uploaded in March. All of these songs will be played on Motmot's Featured Orbit show on Saturday, May 10, from 7pm to 9pm ET. Motmot will ferret out some inside info from the artists to pass along to the listeners. There will also be time to play some other great tunes uploaded to the site in April.

Congratulations to all of the artists who made this month's list. Other artists that got mentioned by DJs this month were Kephas, David Fair, Scott Perkins, One Sad Horse, Dave Hall, and Brent Daniel.

Tune in on the second Saturday of every month to hear the latest from our amazing "Featured Orbits" lineup!

So Long Mike and Max

Last month, we welcomed two DJs back to SongPlanet and this month we are wishing two the best of luck on their new adventures.

Mike-K, aka The Germinator and Mike Kohlgraf, has been a fixture on SongPlanet Radio since November 2004. He's had several different time slots, but is best known for Saturday Night Rocks. While he's leaving us as a DJ, he'll remain as an artist on the site. We're expecting a lot of new tunes from him soon!

Max, aka Matthew Laxton, was our Swedish DJ with a Scottish accent, bringing a double dose of Europe to the WSPR radio stream. Max tells us that he is about to write a book. Let's hope it's not a tell-all on the lives of SongPlanet DJs!

We wish both Mike and Max the best of luck in their new endeavors, and thank them very much for the support they've shown Indie artists over the years.

If you ever wonder who is on the air at any given time, just have a look at our DJ Schedule!

The Runs and More

The Runs

On April 18, Seattle had to deal with The Runs at the Dyslextasy CD Launch Party, and DJs Axe and Motmot were there to witness it! The Cocktail Revisionists and Blockhead were also on the lineup, so it was an all-round great evening of entertainment. Not to mention Patrick Stirrat (of Urban Cheese Records) celebrating his 40th birthday at the same event! Party on Indie Bands!

toronto

Not content to stay home, DJ Motmot will be heading to Toronto for the launch of The James Clark Institute's new circus-themed CD "Sideshow Unattraction" at C'est What in Toronto on May 23. She'd love to meet as many SongPlanet artists as possible while she's in town, so if you are interested, let her know at motmot@songplanet.com.

DJ Show Replays

Did you miss your favorite DJ Show? Well, we've got good news! Starting this week you'll be able to replay the set list from each DJ's most recent show by clicking on their last show set list link and then the "play hi fi" or "play lo fi" link. There will be no DJ banter, but you'll be able to hear all of the music from the show. Or, you can skip forward, go back or move around using your music player. Check it out! It's very cool!
